Family Matters
A year into COVID, lives continue to change, even for those families fortunate enough not to have contracted the virus itself.
At the start of COVID in March of last year, a colleague of mine predicted a baby boom during 2021. While not always cynical, I disagreed, seeing a huge increase in the divorce rate.
Legal Templates, a major US legal contract-creation site recently announced a 34% rise in sales of its basic divorce agreement package, with newlyweds making up about 20% of those sales.
I won’t wax poetic here and wish that my prediction had turned out to be incorrect. The number of marital and family-related matters that we have been handling certainly falls in line with the statistics above, but it certainly brings us no joy to serve divorce or child custody papers, whatever the reasons leading up to it.
Marriages and relationships are challenging enough when there is not a worldwide pandemic with multiple family members working, attending school, and eating at the same dining room table with few options to escape to.
